Video Caption Generator for Reels, Shorts and TikTok

A video caption is a different job from a photo caption. It has to survive being read in half a second while the video is already playing, so it works as a hook rather than a description. This generator writes for that constraint, with separate length bands for Reels, Shorts, TikTok and Facebook video.

Caption, subtitle or on-screen text, which one you need

Three things get called video captions and they do different work. The written caption sits under the post and is what this tool produces. Subtitles are the timed text of the spoken audio, generated by your editor or by the platform itself. On-screen text is the burned-in hook that appears in the first frame, usually one short phrase.

All three matter, but they matter in different ways. Subtitles hold viewers who watch with sound off, which is most people. On-screen text wins or loses the first second. The written caption below the video is what the ranking system reads for topic, and what a viewer reads once they have already decided to stay.

A common mistake is writing the same sentence in all three places. Repeating the on-screen hook word for word in the caption wastes the caption. Use the caption to add the context the video did not have room for, or to ask the question that earns a comment.

Length bands that actually hold on each surface

Reels and TikTok reward short. Sixty to one hundred and fifty characters keeps the whole line visible without the more cutoff, and a truncated hook is a wasted hook. Longer captions do work on these surfaces, but only when the first line stands alone as a complete thought.

YouTube Shorts is the exception, because the title carries most of the search weight. Keep the title under forty characters so it does not truncate in the Shorts shelf, then use the description for the fuller context and the links.

Facebook video sits in the middle, around one hundred to four hundred characters, and rewards a conversational opening far more than a polished one. The generator applies each of these bands automatically once you pick the surface, so you are not counting characters yourself.

Hooks that work when the video is already playing

The strongest video captions do one of four things: they name the mistake the video corrects, they promise a specific payoff with a number in it, they open a loop the video closes, or they say the quiet thing the viewer was already thinking. Everything else is decoration.

Avoid the caption that summarises the video. If the caption says here is how I made this pasta, the viewer has no reason to keep watching, because they already have the headline. Say instead that you made this pasta wrong for six years, and the video is now the answer to a question the caption raised.

Calls to action work on video, but soft ones. A direct link in bio instruction suppresses reach on most short-form surfaces. A question that a viewer can answer in four words does the opposite, because replies are weighted heavily and short replies are the ones people actually leave.

Hashtags on video posts, and how many is too many

Three to five tightly targeted tags outperform fifteen broad ones on every short-form surface we track. Broad tags such as viral, fyp and trending put your post in a feed you cannot win, competing with accounts a thousand times your size, and they tell the classifier nothing about the topic.

The generator returns a tiered mix instead: roughly thirty percent currently trending in your niche, fifty percent niche-specific, twenty percent evergreen. That distribution is what gives a small account a realistic chance of ranking inside a tag rather than vanishing from it in ninety seconds.

If you cross-post the same video to several platforms, regenerate the tags rather than copying them. Tag conventions differ enough between TikTok, Reels and Shorts that a copied set is usually wrong on two of the three.

Frequently asked questions

Does this generate subtitles from my video file?

No. It writes the text caption that sits under the post. Timed subtitles from spoken audio come from your video editor or the platform's built-in subtitle tool.

How long should a Reels or TikTok caption be?

Sixty to one hundred and fifty characters keeps the hook fully visible before the more cutoff on both surfaces.

How many hashtags should a short video have?

Three to five targeted tags. Broad tags such as fyp and viral add noise without adding reach.

Can it write the on-screen hook too?

Yes. Each batch includes short variants under forty characters that work as burned-in first-frame text.

Is it free?

Five batches a day free with no account, and no daily cap once you sign in.
